The 21st Century Boardgames Championship is a games competition that is open to all players and to all suitable games.

Players compete for the title of National Boardgames Champion at CanCon.

Players may play any or all of the games on offer, as many times as they like, with whom they like.

To be eligible for the title of National Boardgames Champion players must play a minimum number of games and a minimum number of different games.

There are also other prizes, including: one for the most consistently good player; one for each game, for the best player of each game; one for playing a lot of different games; one for playing a lot of games, and one for playing a lot of different people.

Of the games in the competition, most are boardgames, but some card games are also included.

Where a game has different versions and expansions, unless otherwise indicated, any of them may be played.

For 2018, the list of (13) games was: – 7 Wonders – Concordia – Dominion – Lords of Waterdeep – Power Grid – Roll for the Galaxy – Scythe – Splendor – Stone Age – Takenoko – Terraforming Mars – Ticket to Ride – Trans America

The list of games for CanCon 2019 will likely be very similar.

To be eligible for the competition, a game: – should be readily available (ie. in print and can be easily obtained); – must have a four-player, individually scored version (sorry, no team games) – must have a good range of player scores – will require minimal supervision by directors of play.

Please note that any decisions by organisers and directors of play are final.

This year we will venture into the Pacific.

It is time to test your skills in the Jungle. Or perhaps defending a small village.

Again, we promise the best terrain and some lively scenarios against opponents who come to enjoy their games.

Event outline

There will be 5 games. Two on Saturday, two on Sunday and 1 on Monday. Each game will be a minimum of three hours. All games will be based in the South West Pacific and hence the predominant terrain will be Tropical.

This will be a 28mm Event. All troops will be regular (unless specifically approved). Your Platoon’s Force Rating will be calculated using the latest Co-calculator and extra support points added to balance the forces before each game. Each scenario will have a set level of support and Force Moral will also be set at the beginning.

You will have a chance to play on a variety of tables, in a variety of terrain vs a number of opponents.

We will follow on from previous successful CANCON Chain of Command events. There will be no “Tournament Winner” though a number of prizes for good game play will be awarded. The event is open to ALL players of ANY experience level.

Organisation Details

All players should be ready for a pre-event briefing at 9.00am on Saturday. The first game will kick off at 9.30am. On Sunday and Monday games will start at 9.00am sharp.

An Event Pack (includes terrain notes and the associated rule guidelines) plus a Player’s Pack (Army List Guidelines and Event Rules) will be available via email from the organiser.

Any questions on lists, terrain or the event can be addressed to the organiser Steve McGuigan : stevemcguigan@optusnet.cm.au

Renaissance at War De Bellis Renationis (DBR)

It’s “Back to the Future” for the 2019 Australian National DBR Tournament as we introduce for the first time a competition set in the early Renaissance period – pre-1601 AD.

The usual six games over 3 days, Friday to Sunday, with the traditional Renaissance Dinner on Saturday night. Only players who complete all six games (including byes) qualify for prizes.

Armies: Players choose an army from any listed in the three WRG army list books provided the army selected is dated before 1601. Players may submit up to two lists but each must be the same date and location with the same or no ally. To avoid penalty and general unpleasantness please submit lists to list.checker@gmail.com no later than Sunday January 20, 2019. All figures must be historically depicted, suitably painted and correctly based.

Terrain: The tables are pre-set and based or themed on historical battles. Defending armies that find they have no compulsory or home terrain on a pre-set battlefield may, at the organisers’ discretion, request one FE of compulsory or home terrain added to the table or replace an existing terrain piece.

Note that Difficult Going (DGo) will not be placed within the 300p centre “Gentlemen’s Fighting Zone” of the battlefield [see also Rules a) below].

Rules: WRG DBR v2 with internationally accepted amendments and guidelines, except:

  1. a) most enclosed fields (E) will be treated as Rough Going (RGo), and
  2. b) if both players agree to time and weather rules the earliest battles can start is Dawn.

Special Tournament Rules in addition to the standard rule book include:

  1. Split of Shot (Sh) into Musket (Msk) [cost as per Sh classification] and Arquebus (Arq) [where listed most classified (O) @ 5 AP except Spanish/Russian Streltsy (S) @ 7 AP and Ottoman Janissaries (F) @ 5 AP]. (detailed Amended Army Lists available on request)
  2. Distributed baggage – costed by command but loss only affects army break point. Non-allied baggage may be deployed together in any command’s deployment area but allied baggage must be within the Allied Command rectangle.
  • Victory and Defeat points are 0 – 20 (10 as per the rule book + 10 based on casualties).

Details of Tournament Rules and other instructions and guidelines, including photos of the battlefield tables, will be emailed after registration closes and included with the Players’ Guide issued before Round 1.

Please contact Phil for information or clarification on tournament rules.

WarGods – Shadows Over Canah

Canah is an ancient land.  A land of long forgotten magic and slumbering elemental powers. A land now resettled.

Biremes ply the costal waters between Olymian colonies These small, but growing towns cluster around their gleaming marble temples, praying that the Gods recognise their worth over that of their neighbours.

Further inland, carvans cross dry, dusty land to reach Ægyptian villages. Farmers work fields blessed by Ptah-inspired irrigations systems, while scribes oversee the raising of monuments. The Childeren of the Gods pray they are protected and blessed above all others.

It is even whispered that in the high cold places, shaggy beasts hunt. Their quarry, dragged before giant stones, to be sacrified to a nameless, primative Power.

During the day, the sun blesses all the lands of Canah. During the day, it’s new-found settlers prospers. But what if Hellios’ chariot does not blaze across the sky? What if Ra’s sun-barge dues not sail the heeavans? What if darkness falls?

Overview

This is a 2 day, 6 game, WarGods of Ægyptus tournament on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January 2019 (Day 1 and Day 2 of CanCon 2019).

With the return to Canah all Warbands are welcom – Ægyptian, Olympian and Wendigo. Tables will be themed around costal areas inhabitted by the Olympians, or interior lands inabited by the  Ægyptians.

Awards and Prizes

Certificates will be awarded for 1st and 2nd overall, best sports and best painted. In order to minimise cost to players, there will not be any CanCon Dragon Trophies, or formal prizes.
